Small town. Big program. Huge expectations.
In many ways, the Mooresville Blue Devils are identical to their opponent tonight: the Kannapolis Wonders.

Having a Division I-bound kicker at its disposal several years ago spoiled West Iredell in that facet of special teams.
“We kind of measure every kicker now by Josh Hoke,” West football coach Mark Weycker said referring to the former Warriors player who concluded a stellar kicking career at Coastal Carolina in 2006.

West Iredell’s volleyball team has gotten out of the gate quickly again, winning each of its first four matches. Marrissa Church piled up 12 kills and served six aces on Tuesday in the Warriors’ 25-15, 25-13, 25-14 victory over previously-unbeaten South Rowan.

Michael Watkins found himself somewhat out of place when he took the pitch on Aug. 20.
But the West Iredell senior had fun. He even scored a goal in the Warriors’ 4-4 tie with South Iredell.

By all accounts, defending boys state soccer champion Lake Norman is still the team to beat in the North Piedmont 3A.
After Mooresville won an intense early-season battle against North Iredell Monday night, the head coaches of both teams said they thought the gap between the Wildcats and the rest of the conference will be smaller this season.

Led by Matt Foxx’s offensive onslaught, Lake Norman cruised to a 5-0 victory over West Iredell on Monday in North Piedmont 3A action.
Foxx scored four goals, including three in a seven-minute span early in the second half, sending the Wildcats to their 30th straight win. They went 27-0 last season en route to capturing the 3A state championship.

Mooresville’s soccer team knows it’s very early in the season.
That doesn’t make Monday’s win over North Iredell any less significant.

When addressing the Lake Norman girls tennis team’s nonconference schedule, Coach Lezlie Carroll stressed the importance of being “battle-tested” for league play.
Facing the defending 3A state champion in your season opener, how’s that for a test?

Lake Norman qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state volleyball playoffs for the first time in 2006.
The Wildcats’ reward as the No. 5 seed from the North Piedmont Conference - the last league team gaining postseason admission - was a first-round matchup at Southwest Guilford, the team that went on to win the state championship.

South Iredell’s offense was a lot of things on Friday.
It was surprisingly explosive through the air. It was sloppy at times, with four lost fumbles.
And when it mattered most, South pounded the football, taking valuable time off the clock and leaving Lake Norman’s high-octane offense on the sidelines.

Mooresville High’s boys cross country team doesn’t look at the winning of last year’s N.C. High School Athletic Association’s state 3A class championship – the first-ever for the program—as an end.
It merely served to highlight what has rapidly become a continuing trend.

Using its bread-and-butter ground game, Hickory distanced itself from Statesville in the second half Friday on its way to a 29-12 victory in the teams’ season opener.
It was far from a one-man show.
The Red Tornadoes, who led 15-12 at the half, did the damage without workhorse Darrien Burch, who fell just shy of the 2,000-yard mark a season ago.
Hickory rushed for 209 yards after the intermission. Six running backs besides Burch combined for 203 of that total.

South Iredell coach Ed Masterton has said all along that the Vikings would rely on their defense to win games early in the season.
The defense did its part on Friday, but the offense more than held up its end as South opened the season with a 21-10 win over North Iredell.

Whether it’s head coach Barclay Marsh’s voice echoing off the walls in the locker room or his players speaking softly on the field after an early practice on a scorching day, the message at Mooresville is clear.
Steeped in tradition, the Blue Devils, having gone 15-21 in the past three years, sound very much like a program expecting to make a resurgence.
