With her blazing speed, Statesville sophomore Sarah Ann Waugh only needs a tiny sliver of space to make good things happen.
Waugh made the most of her few good looks Monday against Mooresville, scoring once and adding two assists as the Greyhounds defeated the Blue Devils 3-2 for their signature win of the season.

The rebuilding Mooresville tennis team is a win away from qualifying for the playoffs.
Mooresville’s 3-2 soccer loss Wednesday to Lake Norman effectively cemented the Blue Devils’ status as the No. 2 playoff team from the North Piedmont 3A.

Statesville nearly canceled the 2008 softball season because the team didn’t have enough players. Several late additions helped keep the program going, even though coach Bobby Morrison had reservations due to the players’ inexperience.

South Iredell’s boys and girls track and field teams won a four-school meet Thursday at Lincolnton.
For the first time this season, Lake Norman didn’t win a North Piedmont 3A golf match.
South Iredell picked up its first conference win in fine fashion.
Lauren Carter had a hat trick Thursday to lead a shorthanded North Iredell squad to a 6-0 win over South Rowan.
West Iredell picked up its first win of the season Thursday, as two early goals stood up in a 2-1 win over Carson.
Jake Deaton is typically a fairly social guy. He chats with teammates during track meets and takes time between throws to demonstrate helpful tips to fellow Blue Devils throwers.

No. 6 golfer Hunter Mitchell had one of his best rounds of the season Wednesday.
South’s baseball team lost several close, low-scoring games in the first run through Southern Piedmont 1A-2A play.

Mooresville took a giant step toward advancing to the playoffs with an 8-1 win over Statesville on Tuesday.
Kim Bessent had three hits and Jennifer Stogner pitched her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the final inning as Lake Norman defeated Carson 5-4.
Hannah Pennell had as many hits as she allowed Tuesday in a 12-2 rout of South Rowan.
East Lincoln picked up a 1-0 Southern Piedmont 1A-2A win over South Iredell on Tuesday.
South Iredell racked up seven hits and scored nine runs Tuesday but it wasn’t enough.
West Iredell lost a heartbreaker Tuesday, falling to South Rowan 6-3.

North’s soccer team will be missing a few players today when the Raiders host West Iredell.
The regional qualifiers for North Iredell’s girls track team again set the tone for the Raiders last week.
Senior Heather Nellis has verbally committed to play softball next season at Greensboro College, citing respect for head coach Kama Tucker and the school’s academics.

Lake Norman’s boys tennis team defeated Mooresville 7-2 Wednesday in a battle for first place in the NPC.
The Lake Norman boys track and field team, led by Joe Hughes, already has seen three school records fall this season.
Lake Norman’s girls track and field team won its first two meets of the season, but today’s Iredell County Championships will be the Wildcats’ first glance at fellow North Piedmont 3A powers Mooresville and Statesville.
Lake Norman once again cruised to a 9-0 victory Monday, beating South Rowan with ease.

Colton Neill and Mark Powell each shot a 40 Monday at Fox Den Country Club, leading South Iredell to a second-place finish against Southern Piedmont 1A-2A opponents.

Statesville’s boys tennis team defeated Northwest Cabarrus on Wednesday for its third victory in as many matches. The run also included a pair of 9-0 wins over North and South Iredell.
Statesville point guard Keyrra Gillespie will be recognized for her recent all-state honor at Monday’s Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education meeting.
Reliever Tanner Stroud performed brilliantly in a tight spot Tuesday during Statesville’s 7-5 loss at Lake Norman.

GRANITE QUARRY — West Iredell threatened to hand East Rowan its first North Piedmont 3A loss Tuesday, but the Mustangs squeaked out a 1-0 victory by scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning.
MOORESVILLE — Lake Norman won both games of a doubleheader Tuesday, beating Statesville 3-0 and 9-1.
Statesville pitched a shutout Tuesday, winning every individual match to beat South Iredell 9-0.
MT. ULLA — Nick Burwell and Ethan Galliher each drove in three runs Tuesday as North Iredell defeated West Rowan 9-7.
LANDIS — West Iredell came up just short of its first win Wednesday, falling to South Rowan 1-0.
Statesville won its third straight match Wednesday, beating Northwest Cabarrus 7-2 in North Piedmont 3A play.
Drew Alford carded West’s top score Monday at Mallard Head Country Club, shooting a 42 to finish tied for 16th.
West track and field coach Robert Thompson is pleased with the group of sprinters he has on his boys team this season but noted the lack of “flat-out burners” the Warriors are accustomed to having.
One of the premier county coaching positions remains vacant, but an end to the search may be in sight.
There appears to be no such thing as an off-season for Lake Norman High’s wrestling programs. The results prove it.

Senior softball pitcher Heather Nellis played the game of a lifetime against Mooresville last month.
With ace Aaron Johnson pitching well and Nick Burwell and Brett Earnest providing depth, North’s baseball team is tied for the North Piedmont 3A’s final playoff berth.
Jordan Farrell gave Lake Norman its first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday and Josh Hennessee closed the door on Statesville as the Wildcats prevailed 7-5.
As soon as the game against Mooresville ended, members of North Iredell’s soccer team stormed the field and pounced on keeper Kawoni Revels.
It may have been the wildest celebration ever after an 8-1 defeat.

With its top six players occupying the top eight spots in the individual standings, Lake Norman’s boys golf team owns a 51-stroke lead in the North Piedmont 3A standings.
Garrett Braun didn’t get the decision on the mound Wednesday in the Wildcats’ 4-3 win over North Iredell, but given the circumstances, his performance was plenty impressive.
Sarah Tang has been a staple in the defensive unit of Lake Norman’s girls soccer team for two years.
Freshman Hannah Mack spotted the hole in the defense and fed fellow freshman Courtney Smith for a beautiful one-touch goal that started the second-half scoring barrage in Mooresville’s 8-1 win Monday over North Iredell.
The Blue Devils, nursing a 2-0 halftime lead, scored five goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half against the depleted Raiders (4-5 overall, 3-5 NPC).
