For the fourth time, a new ensemble of five cast members assembled for the first time in public view to constitute the newest class of inductees into the Mooresville Senior High Athletic Hall of Fame.

Devil runners strut their stuff

Mooresville’s reigning state 3A class champion boys cross country team strutted its stuff for an even more impressive cast of characters to catch last weekend. They, too, had to be impressed with what they all saw.

In the field for the 3A class segment of the prestigious 33rd annual Wendy’s Invitational, the top-ranked Blue Devils even counted a neighboring state’s current number-one squad among its casualties in fashioning a first-place finish.

Time finally ran out on Mooresville High’s boys soccer team’s second-longest winning streak of the season Wednesday night.

Junior midfielder Carson Smith’s last-minute goal served to keep the host Blue Devils on life-support, but the plug was pulled seconds later that sealed the deal on a 3-2 loss rendered at home against returning first-year North Piedmont Conference member East Rowan.

Lake Norman improved to 9-4 in the North Piedmont 3A on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of Mooresville.

The Wildcats (13-6 overall) won 25-13, 25-23 and 25-14. Liz West led the team with 13 kills and six digs, while Lauren Robinson had 13 assists and four aces.

Mooresville High’s varsity boys soccer team keeps putting some of its best feet forward of the season so far.

Only once before this season have the Blue Devils performed better than at their current rate, using a first-half fueled, 2-0 silencing of a visiting North Iredell crew earlier this week to stretch their current winning streak to four straight matches.

Mooresville High’s top-ranked and reigning state 3A class champion boys cross country team put North Carolina’s best feet forward during the course of last weekend’s prestigious McDonald’s Invitational Cross Country Festival.

Among an elite list of by-invitation-only teams in attendance in the national attraction held in Richmond, Va., the Blue Devils posted an overall ninth-place finish in the affair’s Invitational Division that was the best of any other North Carolina entry in the field.

Instead of clearing up one jumbled mess, Mooresville High’s varsity football team helped create another bigger one on the North Piedmont Conference front late last week.

Entering a key league clash at Northwest Cabarrus Friday night knotted in a two-way tie atop the 3A class circuit’s 10-team standings, the Blue Devils fell victim to a multi-pronged offensive assault and endured a 38-24 defeat that – coupled with results posted elsewhere around the league – brought more than twice as many teams back to the head of the class.

Mooresville very nearly got the most from familiar surroundings in its home- opening girls’ golf match last week. Among other attending members of the North Piedmont Conference, the Lady Blue Devils did get the most.

Playing at the Mooresville Municipal Golf Course, the Devilettes cooked up the second-best team stroke score and fashioned the lowest stroke count of any other NPC foe in the nine-team field.

Mooresville High’s volleyball team wasn’t about to relinquish the reins on its longest winning streak of the not-quite half gone season without a fight late last week.

Riding consecutive wins both overall and within the North Piedmont Conference ranks for just the first time all season, the Lady Blue Devils provided reigning champion and current league-leading West Iredell with an early wake-up call before having their win spree snapped by a three-games-to-one count.

Mooresville’s defense forced a whopping eight turnovers on Friday as the Blue Devils rolled to a 22-0 shutout victory over Bandys in their season opener.

Mooresville forced three fumbles and picked off a pass in a low-scoring first half. The Blue Devils led 2-0 at intermission after a botched Bandys punt resulted in a safety.

Whether it’s head coach Barclay Marsh’s voice echoing off the walls in the locker room or his players speaking softly on the field after an early practice on a scorching day, the message at Mooresville is clear.

Steeped in tradition, the Blue Devils, having gone 15-21 in the past three years, sound very much like a program expecting to make a resurgence.
