Lake Norman’s softball team made its first playoff appearance Tuesday, but the Wildcats couldn’t muster the firepower to beat Hickory Ridge.
West Iredell is building a hitting and pitching facility next to its baseball and softball fields.
The sun may be the only thing hotter than West’s softball team.
Mark Barber had an impressive showing in the hurdles Saturday at the 3A West Regional.

MOORESVILLE—Look who is still playing baseball.
Lake Norman continued its roll through the 3A state playoffs Tuesday, beating North Buncombe 6-0 to advance to the third round.
Hannah Pennell pitched a 12-inning gem and Kaylyn Chapman came through with some timely hitting Tuesday to lead West Iredell past R-S Central 1-0 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
South Iredell sophomore Clay Brown took third place individually at the two-day 2A state golf championship at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Pinehurst.
North’s baseball team couldn’t quite get what coach Matthew Poole was searching for in the season’s final week.
The bus rides to and from away games were where senior Kawoni Revels left her mark on the girls soccer team this year.
It’s been more than a year since senior Cuadarius Teasley played a sport at North Iredell.
He’s more than made up for lost time.
Mooresville sophomore Billy Nantz crossed home plate standing up and braced himself for the barrage of teammates pouring out of the dugout.
Jon Crucitti stopped at second base with his hands on his knees and then fell on to his back and flapped his arms, creating an impromptu dirt angel.
Three Iredell County schools will open the softball playoffs on the road this week.

Girls soccer coach Jon Mertes expects to have a former Wildcats player back in the Lake Norman lineup in 2009. Tia King confirmed last week that she is moving back to the area with her mother.

MOORESVILLE — Lake Norman’s girls soccer team blanked Porter Ridge 2-0 in the second round of the 3A state playoffs Saturday.
GREENSBORO—Lake Norman fought off a furious Southeast Guilford rally Friday night to earn the program’s first playoff victory.
The pursuit of another state title is over for Statesville’s boys tennis team, but not for a couple of its players.
Statesville’s boys golf team finished ninth Monday at the 3A Midwest Regional, played at Jamestown Park Golf Course. Ben Morrison carded a 7-over-par 79 to lead the Greyhounds.
The season drew to a close Wednesday night for Statesville’s girls soccer team following a 2-1 loss to Kings Mountain in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

The toughest obstacle South Iredell’s Carly Couch faced at last week’s 2A track Midwest Regional was the wind.
Mooresville’s seniors still remember the numbness and pure shock they felt last year after a stunning 8-4 loss to Parkland during the first round of the 3A baseball playoffs.
It was a bitter end to an otherwise successful season that included the program’s first conference title in 22 years.
Mooresville and Lake Norman will face big tests Friday in the first round of the 3A state baseball playoffs.

MOORESVILLE — Expectations are high for Lake Norman’s girls soccer team, which is why no one was beaming Wednesday after the Wildcats defeated Asheboro 3-1 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
West Iredell’s softball team opens the 3A playoffs on the road Tuesday against the top seed from the Southwestern Conference.
West’s disappointing baseball season ended Monday with a 7-4 loss to Carson. The Warriors fin-ished 8-15 (5-13 NPC).

Despite pulling out a 12-8 win Monday over South Rowan, the Raiders will not advance to the 3A baseball playoffs.

South Iredell sophomore Clay Brown earned a spot in the 2A state championship by shooting a 73 during Monday’s 2A Midwest Regional at Eagle Chase Golf Club.
Mooresville’s Josh Nelson broke through Monday, clinching a berth in the 3A state tournament with his play in the Midwest Regional at Jamestown Park Golf Course.
Lake Norman leapfrogged Mooresville for the lead in the NPC Wachovia Cup standings following a strong winter sports season.
Lake Norman’s girls soccer team had not lost in 46 straight conference games prior to Wednesday’s 2-1 setback against North Piedmont 3A foe Northwest Cabarrus.
Members of North Iredell’s girls soccer team know the Raiders will be the underdog in Wednesday’s 3A playoff opener against Jamestown Ragsdale.
It’s a role they became quite accustomed to this year.

Mooresville’s tennis team, which is going through a rebuilding year, has all six of its players in the 3A West Regionals.
The Blue Devils baseball team will close the NPC season with a home game tonight against West Rowan.
Like the school’s baseball team, Mooresville’s soccer team also earned the NPC’s No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
Mooresville’s boys track team is now two for two.
With a strong focus on winning the county, conference, regional and state track meets this season, the Blue Devils were dominant again in last week’s North Piedmont 3A meet victory.

Trailing by one run with two outs in the seventh inning and its season on the line, the Wildcats clawed their way to a dramatic 5-4 win over North Iredell on Friday in a must-win game.
MOORESVILLE—North Iredell scored twice in the first inning Friday and coasted from there, spoiling Lake Norman’s Senior Day with a 7-0 win.

Northwest Cabarrus stunned Lake Norman 2-1 Wednesday night.
Mooresville dominated the boys meet and took second place in the girls meet at the North Piedmont 3A championships.
Sarah Ann Waugh recorded another hat trick Thursday as Statesville blanked Carson 4-0.
Lake Norman picked up its 20th win Thursday, defeating North Iredell 5-1 in the regular-season finale.
The SPC’s jumbled softball standings have become clearer in recent weeks. South Iredell was 5-6 in SPC play entering Thursday’s game and East Lincoln was 6-5.
South has a total of 18 representatives and relay teams set to compete in Saturday’s track 2A Midwest Regionals.
A regular season game that looked eminently winnable has turned tough for South’s soccer team. The Vikings host Cherryville (5-6-5 overall, 2-4-3 SPC) tonight, a team coming off a 1-0 win over conference leader North Lincoln.
South Iredell has sent at least one individual to the golf regionals each of the past few years. They’ll go as a team this time.
The Gridiron Cup could be shelved permanently in someone’s trophy case after this fall.

Nick Setzer and Tyler Tomlin fell one victory shy of qualifying for regionals Tuesday, when the doubles tandem lost in the NPC tennis tournament quarterfinals to Lake Norman’s Taylor Burton and David Dyer.
Jermail Rucker was one of the surprises Tuesday during the first day of the NPC track and field championships.
James Malzi finished 20th in the final North Piedmont 3A golf standings. As one of the top four individuals from a team that didn’t qualify for the Midwest Regional, Malzi punched his own ticket to the tournament.
West Iredell’s baseball team rides a three-game winning streak into Friday’s game at Mooresville.
As Monday’s 3A Midwest Regional approaches, things are already looking good for Mooresville’s golf team.
And it has nothing to do with golf itself.

Second baseman Chase LeVan doubled twice as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night Tuesday and West Iredell turned back Statesville 8-4.
Lake Norman’s Travis Taylor won last year’s Iredell County golf championship after breaking his driver.
He repeated as champion Tuesday with a broken hand.
North junior Josh McMahan, a 245-pound linebacker, took part in the Shrine Bowl combine last week.
Travis Cartner and Jerry Widner paced the Raiders at last week’s 18-hole conference tournament. Cartner had a 92 and Widner finished with a 96.
Two-sport athlete Zach Spencer had signed to play football with Guilford College.
Keeper Kawoni Revels will rejoin North for tonight’s soccer game against South Rowan after suffering a back injury.
North Iredell senior Tyler Christenberry is known as a smart, defensive-minded catcher. He calls pitches for the Raiders and teams rarely run on him due to his strong arm.
But Christenberry’s most notable contribution this year has come at the plate.

Lake Norman’s boys golf team enters today’s Iredell County championship at Fox Den Golf Club looking to defend a couple of titles.
Lake Norman’s Matt Dowell and Timmy Johnson will play doubles together, as will Taylor Burton and David Dyer, during the North Piedmont 3A championships, which begin today at Mooresville.
One of the most highly decorated girls tennis players in the county is attending Lake Norman this semester.

After consecutive one-goal losses to Lake Norman and Statesville last week, Mooresville’s girls soccer team got back on track in a big way.
