The pursuit of another state title is over for Statesville’s boys tennis team, but not for a couple of its players.
Statesville’s boys golf team finished ninth Monday at the 3A Midwest Regional, played at Jamestown Park Golf Course. Ben Morrison carded a 7-over-par 79 to lead the Greyhounds.
The season drew to a close Wednesday night for Statesville’s girls soccer team following a 2-1 loss to Kings Mountain in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

A capacity crowd gathered at Statesville’s Herb Sampsel Gymnasium on Wednesday night to see former President Bill Clinton as he campaigned for his wife, Hillary. Sarah Ann Waugh was one of those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Clinton, who last held the highest office in the land when the sophomore was 8 years old.
Statesville’s boys and girls track teams combined for six wins at last year’s North Piedmont 3A championships.
Despite strong performances by John Lewis (77) Ben Morrison (77), Dalyn Bellingham (78) and Jimmy Sappenfield (80), Statesville gave up ground in the final North Piedmont 3A golf standings.

Eight of the Statesville boys tennis team’s final nine regular-season matches are against NPC opponents, but winning another league championship will be harder than returning an Andy Roddick serve.
Sarah Ann Waugh has had several multiple-goal games this season for the Greyhounds, but the sophomore has benefited from the addition of Storm Mayberry.
Despite having only one win in its first seven conference games, Statesville is just two games back of sixth-place North Iredell in the North Piedmont 3A baseball standings. The league gets six playoff berths.

When Keyrra Gillespie discovered Concord’s girls basketball team comfortably won the 3A state championship last Saturday in Chapel Hill, a bit of envy set in.
“It’s going to be Statesville next year,” Gillespie said with a monstrous grin. “We’re only losing three players. I think if we do what we did this year and work even harder, that’ll be us – as long as everybody has their minds on the same things and wants the same goals.”

Statesville’s boys track and field team added Adrian Sloan, a well-rounded athlete who plays football and basketball. The senior came out for track for the first time this season. Sloan is projected to run in the 400-meter race, possibly more. He will be a big help because of his work ethic, coach Sonny Schofield said.
