Tornadoes blow by Hounds in second half

Using its bread-and-butter ground game, Hickory distanced itself from Statesville in the second half Friday on its way to a 29-12 victory in the teams’ season opener.

It was far from a one-man show.

The Red Tornadoes, who led 15-12 at the half, did the damage without workhorse Darrien Burch, who fell just shy of the 2,000-yard mark a season ago.

Hickory rushed for 209 yards after the intermission. Six running backs besides Burch combined for 203 of that total.
